The four main crane types

Mobile cranes are classified by their carrier (the base that moves the crane) and their drivetrain. The four main types are: truck cranes (mounted on a standard truck chassis, drive on public roads), crawler cranes (mounted on a tracked undercarriage, cannot drive on roads), all-terrain cranes (specialized multi-axle chassis with both on-road and off-road capability), and rough-terrain cranes (compact, four-wheel-drive cranes designed for off-road use on rough job sites). Each type has distinct strengths and limitations, and the right choice depends on your specific lifting requirements and working conditions.

Truck cranes: road-legal mobility

A truck crane (also called an automobile crane) is a lifting superstructure mounted on a standard or modified truck chassis. It can drive on public roads at highway speeds, making it the most mobile crane type for jobs requiring frequent relocation. Truck cranes are the most common mobile crane worldwide, particularly in the 25–130 tonne range that covers most general construction lifting.

Capacity and applications

Truck cranes range from 5 to over 300 tonnes, with 25–130 tonnes being most common. The 25–50 tonne class handles general construction, steel erection, HVAC, and utility work. The 50–130 tonne class is used for larger building construction, bridge work, and infrastructure. Above 130 tonnes, the multi-axle chassis required for road legality becomes very expensive, and all-terrain cranes become more practical.

Advantages and limitations

Advantages: Road mobility at highway speeds (60–90 km/h); quick setup with outriggers in minutes; low operating cost with standard truck chassis parts; affordable purchase price; versatile for a wide range of lifting tasks.

Limitations: Limited off-road capability — requires firm, level ground for outriggers; lower capacity at long radii due to smaller outrigger base; road weight/dimension limits constrain maximum counterweight and boom length (large models may need separate counterweight transport); two-operator design (driving cab + lifting cab).

Transport

Crawler cranes: heavy lifting on any terrain

A crawler crane mounts the lifting superstructure on a tracked undercarriage, similar to an oversized excavator track system. The tracks provide excellent stability and low ground pressure, allowing operation on soft, uneven, or muddy ground where a wheeled crane would sink. Crawler cranes are preferred for heavy lifting on large construction, infrastructure, and industrial projects where the crane remains on one site for an extended period.

Capacity and applications

Crawler cranes range from 30 to over 3,000 tonnes (specialized lattice-boom models), with 50–250 tonnes being most common for general construction. Typical applications include high-rise construction (climbing cranes), bridge erection, wind turbine installation, power plant construction, petrochemical maintenance, heavy industrial lifting, and foundation work. Lattice-boom crawler cranes achieve very long boom lengths (100+ meters) and high capacity at radius.

Advantages and limitations

Advantages: Excellent stability with wide tracked base; can lift and carry (pick-and-carry) loads without outriggers; low ground pressure for soft ground; high capacity at long radii due to larger base and heavier counterweight; on-site mobility including while carrying a load; long boom capability with lattice booms.

Limitations: Cannot drive on public roads (tracks damage pavement); slow travel speed (1–2 km/h on site); requires partial disassembly for transport (boom, counterweight, tracks) taking 1–3 days with an assist crane; higher purchase cost; track undercarriage has many wear components requiring maintenance and eventual replacement.

Transport

Crawler cranes require specialized transport. Between local sites, a heavy-duty multi-axle low-bed trailer is used, with partial disassembly. For international export, they typically ship as breakbulk cargo because they are too large for containers or standard RoRo. Transport and mobilization costs are a significant factor in total ownership cost.

All-terrain and rough-terrain cranes

All-terrain (AT) cranes

All-terrain cranes combine the road mobility of a truck crane with the off-road capability of a rough-terrain crane. They use a specialized multi-axle chassis (2–8 axles) with all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, and large tires that handle both highway speeds (up to 85 km/h) and off-road conditions. Capacity ranges from 40 to 1,200 tonnes, with 80–300 tonnes most common. AT cranes are the premium choice for lifting contractors needing a single crane for both long-distance road travel and rough job sites. They are more expensive than truck cranes and have higher maintenance costs due to the complex all-wheel-drive and steering systems.

Rough-terrain (RT) cranes

Rough-terrain cranes are compact, four-wheel-drive cranes designed specifically for off-road operation on rough, uneven job sites. They have a single cab (the operator sits in the same cab for both driving and lifting), large deep-tread tires, and excellent ground clearance. RT cranes are not designed for highway travel — they are typically transported between sites on a low-bed trailer, though some smaller models can be driven short distances on public roads with permits. How to choose: five factors

1. Lifting capacity and radius

The most important factor is the maximum weight you need to lift and the maximum radius (horizontal distance from crane center to load). Every crane has a load chart specifying maximum load at each boom length and radius — you must choose a crane whose chart covers your heaviest lift at the required radius. Do not choose based on maximum capacity alone; a 100-tonne crane may only lift 100 tonnes at 3–4 meters radius, with capacity dropping significantly as radius increases. For long-radius lifts (15–30 meters), crawler and all-terrain cranes generally outperform truck cranes.

2. Job site conditions

Ground conditions determine whether a wheeled crane can operate. Soft, muddy, or uneven ground may cause a truck crane to sink even with outriggers and ground mats. A crawler crane's low ground pressure makes it suitable for these conditions. Paved or compacted gravel sites work fine for truck or all-terrain cranes. Also consider space constraints — rough-terrain cranes are most compact in tight spaces, while crawler cranes need more room for the tracked base and swing radius.

3. Relocation frequency

If you move the crane daily or weekly between sites, a truck or all-terrain crane is essential — they drive to the next site under their own power. If the crane stays on one large project for months or years, a crawler crane is appropriate despite high mobilization cost, because its on-site mobility and lifting performance pay off over the project duration. For cranes operating within a single industrial facility (refinery, power plant, port), a rough-terrain crane is often best.

4. Budget and total cost of ownership

Truck cranes are the most affordable in purchase price and operating cost, making them the default for general construction. All-terrain cranes cost 30–60 percent more than truck cranes of similar capacity with higher maintenance costs, but offer superior off-road capability. Crawler cranes have high purchase and mobilization costs but unmatched heavy-lift performance. Rough-terrain cranes are mid-range but require transport between sites. 5. Rental vs. purchase

For cranes used less than 60–70 percent of the time, renting may be more cost-effective — especially for crawler and large all-terrain cranes with high purchase and mobilization costs. If you need a crane for a single project or occasional heavy lifts, renting from a crane rental company may be best. The Chinese crane market is dominated by three major manufacturers: SANY, XCMG, and Zoomlion. FAQ

Can a truck crane operate on muddy or soft ground?

Truck cranes require firm, level ground for outrigger deployment. On soft ground, outriggers can sink causing instability. Steel or timber ground mats can help for moderately soft ground, but for very soft, muddy, or marshy conditions, a crawler crane is appropriate due to its low ground pressure. Never operate a truck crane on soft ground without proper ground preparation and a stability assessment.

Truck crane vs all-terrain — what is the difference?

Both drive on public roads, but differ in off-road capability. A truck crane uses a standard truck chassis with rear-wheel drive, road tires, and limited ground clearance — designed for road travel and firm job sites. An all-terrain crane uses a specialized multi-axle chassis with all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, and large off-road tires — it can travel at highway speeds AND operate on rough ground. AT cranes are more expensive to buy and maintain but more versatile. In Europe and the Middle East, AT cranes are more common; in Asia, Africa, and South America, truck cranes are more common due to lower cost.

How much does it cost to transport a crawler crane between sites?

For a 100-tonne crawler crane, mobilization (disassembly, transport on 3–5 low-bed trucks, reassembly) can range from USD 5,000 to USD 20,000+ depending on distance and local rates. For 250+ tonne cranes, mobilization can cost USD 20,000–50,000+ and take 3–7 days. This is why crawler cranes are economical only for long-duration projects. For short projects, a truck or all-terrain crane is more cost-effective despite lower lifting capacity.

What is "pick-and-carry" and which cranes can do it?

Pick-and-carry means lifting a load and then traveling while carrying it, without outriggers. This is useful on large sites where the crane must move a load a short distance. Crawler cranes are designed for pick-and-carry — their stable tracked base allows travel with a load (typically 50–70 percent of rated capacity). Truck cranes and most all-terrain cranes cannot pick-and-carry — they must deploy outriggers for all lifting. Rough-terrain cranes may have limited pick-and-carry on some models.

Used Chinese crane or new international brand?

Chinese cranes (SANY, XCMG, Zoomlion) offer significantly lower prices — a used 100-tonne Chinese truck crane may cost 40–60 percent less than a comparable new Liebherr or Tadano. Chinese cranes have improved dramatically in quality and are widely used globally. International brands generally offer better global parts/service, longer design life, and higher resale in developed markets.
